Words Have Power

Nirvana's lead singer Kurt Cobain wrote a song entitled, "I Hate Myself and I Want to Die." When he was asked about it in an interview, he claimed it was all a joke. But apparently, he didn't have control over his words so much as they had control over him: Not a year after the song's release he killed himself.

Proverbs (18:21) says "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Words have power, a power that might be stronger than the speaker realizes. It is important to watch our words. We are responsible for every careless word we say.

Another similar example is the many rappers who sing about crime as if it's all fun and games but later are convicted of the very crimes they sing about. Is this really a surprise? There is obviously a connection between our words and our deeds. Or as this Proverb frames it: We will eat the fruit of our lips!
